Lovers of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” don’t have to go all the way to London to experience the musical version of the beloved children’s book: “Matilda the Musical” opened at the Stuttgart Theatre Center on Kelley Barracks last week. This award-winning stage adaptation tells the story of a young girl with a challenging home life who stands up for injustice while embracing her uniqueness.
Scheduled to run through Sunday, Dec. 22, the family-friendly show promises to delight with high-energy dance numbers and clever, catchy songs, said Stuttgart Theatre Center Artistic Director Sarah Viola. Attendees can look forward to an affordable night of entertainment with a relatable cast.
“At its heart, it’s a story that resonates with all ages,” Viola said. “They will clap, they will dance in their seats, and maybe tear up a bit. There will be great dancing and some special magic effects.”
She also praised the youth-led cast, adding, “The kids are so talented. They’re trained in dance and singing and theater, and they are bringing it and taking no prisoners.”
This is Viola’s first musical as the theatre’s full-time artistic director, beginning her tenure earlier this fall with “The Woman in Black.” She got her start with the Stuttgart Theatre Center as a volunteer, but has an extensive performing background in opera.
The local production features a volunteer ensemble of active duty military, family members, civilians, and local nationals, including many children from schools on the installation, and U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart Community Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Don Williamson as the evil headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. Although he originally auditioned for other roles, Viola says there was just something about his voice and comedic timing that fit the character.
“I probably have more in common with Mr. Rogers than Miss Trunchbull, but Trunchbull is every bully you’ve ever had,” Williamson said, adding that he’s channeled a combination of his fifth grade teacher, high school hockey coach, and Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter.
Performances take place at the Kelley Theatre, Building 3320 on Kelley Barracks. Viola said opening weekend ticket sales went well, with future matinees close to selling out.
