Germany and Switzerland draw 1:1 at the European Football Championship; German fans celebrate their group victory with a motorcade in Stuttgart
Germany has clinched victory in their group! Thanks to Niklas Füllkrug’s late equalizer against Switzerland, the German national team is now in first place at the end of the group stage and could make another trip to Stuttgart in the quarter-finals. In the Swabian metropolis, however, a motorcade was the order of the day Sunday night. After falling behind 1-0 against the Swiss, fans and officials were already trembling for the group win. The later it got, the quieter the German fans became in the Frankfurt stadium; many had already resigned themselves to second place at this point. But then came “Fülle”, who nodded in David Raum’s cross with his head in stoppage time to make the final score 1:1. After that, there was no holding back in the stadium or at the public viewing area – the Germany fans celebrated the draw as if it were a victory. The supporters of the DFB team also took the opportunity in Stuttgart to get into their flagged cars to celebrate the group win – and everything remained peaceful. The European Football Championship enters now the “hot phase”
The European Championship is entering the hot phase, more than half of the games have been played – and the group stage will soon be over. Three teams were already confirmed as round of 16 finalists before the last matchday. Who will advance to the knockout round and for whom is the European Championship already over? Here’s an overview:
Group A
With two wins against Scotland (5:1) and Hungary (2:0) and a late draw against Switzerland (1:1), Germany qualified for the knockout phase as group winners with relative ease. The team of national coach Julian Nagelsmann has lived up to its role as favorites. The DFB team will play its round of 16 match on Saturday, June 29, in Dortmund (9 p.m.). They will face the runners-up from Group C.
Switzerland is also in the round of 16. As group runners-up, they will face the runners-up from Group B. The Italians have occupied this position so far.
Hungary are in third place in the final ranking, but whether they are among the four best third-placed teams remains to be seen as they only finished with three points.
Group B
The Spaniards are the group winners ahead of the final matchday. They will play their round of 16 match on Sunday, June 30, in Cologne against a third-placed team (A/D/E/F) Italy, Albania and Croatia can all still progress.
Group C
The outcome of Group C is still completely open. England have the best starting position with four points, while Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia have yet to win.
Group D
Poland are out, the rest is wide open. France, the Netherlands and Austria all have a chance of winning the group.
Group E
Group E with Belgium, Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia is the most balanced group. All teams have three points ahead of the third matchday. (Stuttgarter Nachrichten, June 24)
Editor’s note: the USAG Stuttgart PAO didn’t receive information on Group F in the Stuttgarter Nachrichten article we obtained. However, our review of Group F shows Portugal as the group winners; they will play their round of 16 match on Monday, July 1 in Frankfurt against a third-place team (A/B/C). Turkey, Czechia, and Georgia can all still progress.
Stuttgart – Serious accident with police motorcycles involved in Degerloch
A serious traffic accident involving two motorcyclists occurred near Albplatz in Degerloch late on Monday morning. According to an initial police report, police motorcycles were involved in the accident.
Emergency calls were received by the police and fire department at around 11.15 am. Due to the severity of the accident, the fire department was on the scene with a total of nine emergency vehicles – including two ambulances, an emergency ambulance and a fire engine – and a total of 32 firefighters. A helicopter was also deployed.
According to the police, the serious traffic accident occurred near Löffelstraße. (Stuttgarter Nachrichten, June 24)
