A6 near Dielheim – Transport with US missile launcher breaks down on Autobahn

A heavy transport with an armored missile launcher of the U.S. Armed Forces broke down on the Autobahn 6 near Dielheim in the Rhine-Neckar district.

The highway had to be closed for a short time the day before for the recovery, as the police announced on Wednesday. For this purpose, a 150-ton mobile crane was used. A serious hydraulic damage had occurred on the heavy transporter.

“Fortunately, no increased danger emanated from the rocket launcher, as it was not operational without weapon systems and ammunition,” the report said.  (Stgt Nachrichten, Aug 16)

Vacation road works in Stuttgart – Further closures of “Obere Weinsteige” (S-Degerloch)

With the beginning of the summer vacations, the Stuttgart Civil Engineering Office is carrying out extensive road repair work in the Obere Weinsteige. The pavement work affects the section from the intersection at Haigst to Karl-Pfaff-Strasse in Degerloch. For the renewal of the roadway in the intersection Obere Weinsteige/Auf dem Haigst, it is now necessary to close the connection to Haigst from August 18 to September 9. During this period, the access and exit between Haigst and Obere Weinsteige will be closed. Access to Haigst will be made possible by the signposted U1 detour via Bopser and Alte Weinsteige. The exit from Haigst will be via detour U2 to Obere Weinsteige. The B 27 remains passable in both directions. (Stgt Nachrichten, Aug 16)

VfB Stuttgart – Reconstruction on schedule – This is how the MHP Arena will present itself for the start of the new soccer season

A visit to a stadium is first and foremost a visual experience. There are many impressions, much to see, much to process. But such a visit is also an acoustic experience – and this coming Saturday in Stuttgart it will be a completely new one.

VfB Stuttgart kicks off the new Bundesliga season against VfL Bochum (3:30 p.m./live ticker).   After the last matchday of the 2021/2022 season, the reconstruction of the main stand has begun, and work is still “in full swing” (Becker), but the now upcoming start of the season marks an important milestone. And the architect sounds happy and also a little proud when he can say shortly before the kick-off: “In fact, the relevant areas can go into operation as planned.” During the summer break, the electrical system of the main grandstand, including that of the floodlights, was “relocated,” as the architect calls it. The structural work inside has been completed, and the seats have been installed in the new lower tier. The side areas can already be used again, as can all areas of the upper tier. This will increase the stadium capacity to 56,589 spectators in this Bundesliga first round (later 60,000).

The interim goal has been achieved, and up to 300 people were working on the construction site at the same time last year. And time and again, the stadium had to be prepared in between so that Bundesliga home games could take place there. “The construction company did a great job, my compliments to them,” says Eberhard Becker, who emphasizes once again: “It’s a mammoth project.”

VfB’s last preliminary round match will be in Mönchengladbach in early 2024, the first second round match in Bochum. The Stuttgart team will then play at home for the first time in the new year on January 26 at the earliest – and by then the reconstruction should be completely finished. Five European Championship games will then be played in Stuttgart in the summer.  Therefore, after the game next Saturday, the work will continue “at full throttle.  (Stgt Nachrichten, Aug 16)

Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis – Bee colonies affected by epidemic

According to the information, American foulbrood is a bacterial infectious disease that affects the brood of bee colonies. Most of the brood dies. At the latest in the following winter, the weakened colony dies completely. This bee disease is not transmissible to humans. The honey can be eaten without restriction. Beekeepers’ hearts bleed, because for many of them the bees are far more than busy and financially profitable work animals. The busy little bees have grown close to the hearts of many of them, well aware of their enormous importance for nature and also for us humans. Without bees, no food – this realization has become widely accepted in view of their function as pollinators. But even those who are not beekeepers are now challenged.

Because of the enormous harmfulness of the pathogen, the severity of the disease, the immense risk of infection for neighboring bee colonies, its epidemic spread and the possible economic consequences, American foulbrood (AFB) is listed in the Ordinance on Notifiable Animal Diseases, just as it is listed in the Bee Disease Ordinance. It is therefore important to prevent the spread of it.

Some honeys from abroad, especially from overseas, can be contaminated with spores of the bee disease. Beekeepers and associations regularly warn against this. Consumers are therefore urged to rinse honey jars thoroughly before throwing them into the bottle bank. This is because bees use these leftovers to feed their own brood. They fly to disposed jars and may carry the spores into their hives, where the bacterium then destroys their brood. About three-quarters of honeys labeled as imported honeys were infected with spores of the American foulbrood pathogen. (Stgt Nachrichten, Aug 16)
