U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Mariano Alvarez officially to the garrison command team family during an Assumption of Command Ceremony on Panzer Kaserne, June 29.
Alvarez joins USAG Stuttgart with his wife, Argelia Rodriguez and three of their four children; Tatiana, Katerina and Andres, from the 3rd Infantry Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Fort Stewart, Georgia where he also served as the Command Sergeant Major.

Bio: Command Sergeant Major Mariano Z. Alvarez
Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Mariano Z. Alvarez was born in Brownsville, Texas and enlisted in the United States Army in 1988. He completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he was awarded the Military Occupational Skill classification 29E-Radio Repairer. His military assignments include 2nd Armor Calvary Regiment Regimental Support Squadron Nurnberg, Germany where he served as a Radio Repairer; 24th Mechanized Infantry, Fort Stewart, Georgia where he served as a Squad Leader; 596th Maintenance Company, Darmstadt, Germany where he served as a Squad Leader, Shop Foreman, and Communications Electronics Maintenance Chief; A Company 73rd Ordnance Battalion, Fort Gordon, Georgia where he served as HQ/A Company Platoon Sergeant, Communication Electronics Instructor and Senior Instructor Writer; C Company 73rd Ordnance Battalion, Fort Gordon, Georgia where he served as a Drill Sergeant and Senior Drill Sergeant; B Company 73rd Ordnance Battalion, Fort Gordon, Georgia where he served as the Senior Drill Sergeant; selected as the 2002 73rd Ordnance Battalion “Drill Sergeant of the Year”; Materiel Maintenance Command, Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as a Signal Officer; 157th Quartermaster Company, 551st QM Battalion, Fort Hood Texas, where he served as the First Sergeant; 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Kaiserslautern Germany where he served as the G4 SGM; 21st Theater Sustainment Command where he served as the Special Troop Battalion CSM; and the 3rd Infantry Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Fort Stewart, Georgia where he served as the Command Sergeant Major.
His military schools include Warrior Leader Course; Advance Leader Course; Senior Leader Course; Cadre Training; Basic Instructor Training Course; Army Retention Course; NBC Officer Course; SHARP Training Course; Drill Sergeant School; Brigade Pre-Command Course (PCC); IMCOM PCC; Battalion PCC; Army Force Management Course and Sergeant Major Academy Class 58.
CSM Alvarez has served in numerous deployments to include Gulf War 1991, Iraq; IFOR Bosnia 1995; SFOR Bosnia 1997; Iraq 2005 and Afghanistan in 2014. Command Sergeant Major Alvarez has a Masters of Education in Organizational Leadership from North Central University of Arizona and a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College with a Certification in Homeland Security.
CSM Alvarez’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (4OLC), Army Commendation Medal (4OLC), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (4OLC), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Overseas Service Medal, NATO Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (SA), Kuwait Liberation Medal (GK), Army Superior Unit Award Citation (ASUA), and the Army Valorous Unit Award. He also earned the US Army Drill Sergeant Badge and the Combat Action Badge.
CSM Alvarez is married to the former Argelia Rodriguez. They have four children Ezra, Tatiana, Katerina and Andres.
